The subject area Animation is structured into basic and project studies, both lasting for two years each, whereas the basic studies are attended by all students of the Filmakademie jointly and interdisciplinary. The project studies at Animationsinstitut offer students the opportunity to focus on their own projects as well as to specialize in an elective area of studies. Animation Artist is one of four specializations within the subject area Animation. Students who choose the specialization Animation Artist have the possibility to pursue their paths as Animation Directors, Concept Artists or Character Animators.
- The Animation Directors are in charge of the artistic overall responsibility of a project – from idea to project closure. During the preparation and realization of a project the Animation Directors take care of any artistic issues.
- The Concept Artists define the individual look of every project. Therefore they contribute to every step of the production process: from first sketches through character and production design to the digital prototype and eventually the final image.
- The Character Animator work with pre-developed materials and are therefore able to solely focus on the process of animation. It is favorable to work on a variety of projects, hence bringing a wide range of characters to life as "actors."
The structure of project studies within the subject area Animation is modeled on the production of animation and VFX projects and is structured into five production phases. At the end of each phase the students have to achieve specific milestones to ensure that the project can enter the next phase. Every team is supervised by visiting lecturers during the different phases. The Head of Production and the project consultants mentor the project process.
