You are in the lower earth orbit on a mission to the International Space Station ISS. Next to you, shuttle captain Charles Overmyer steers the spaceship - but suddenly he is put out of action by a malfunction of the shuttle. It's up to you to steer the shuttle safely to the ISS. What sounds like a dramatic science fiction film, is in fact the starting point for the VR experience ASPERITY (Director: Sebastian Ingenfeld | Producer: Lena-Carolin Lohfink | Technical Director: Seyed Ahmad Housseini).
ASPERITY is a multisensory experience that begins even before you put on your VR glasses. While you take seat on the detailed replica of a cockpit chair, you get a foretaste of the upcoming adventure. With the help of a joystick, the player can control the shuttle, while a glove with a Vive Tracker gives them the opportunity to operate the switches in the cockpit. The immersive experience is enhanced by the vibration of the seat and the binaural sound. All of these features turn ASPERITY intoan exciting 360° installation that puts the user in the middle of space. "It is a great experience to be able to break out of the personal comfort zone of linear filmmaking and be challenged over and over again," says director Sebastian Ingenfeld. For producer Lena-Carolin Lohfink, the project was a unique experience: "Producing ASPERITY with all its features was exciting, divers and has always presented me with new challenges that I have grown up to".
