Longing for Wilderness is a 360-degree VR-experience that has been implemented as kick-off-project for the VR NOW talent development initiative of Animationsinstitut.
Longing for Wilderness takes the user on a fast-paced ride from the bustling streets of a modern metropolis through dense forests to a wide and quiet mountain landscape. The 360-degree experience addresses our longing for experiencing nature in its primal state – an opportunity that we rarely find in today’s age.
Alumnus Marc Zimmermann was a participant of VR NOW’s kickoff. With his VR-project Longing for Wilderness that he developed as part of the talent development initiative, he takesthe user on a fast-paced ride from the bustling streets of a modern metropolis through dense forests to a wide and quiet mountain landscape. In our interview, Marc names a few good reasons for you to apply for VR NOW.
1. What fascinates you about VR?
Marc: My passion is to express feelings, emotions, and concepts through landscapes and digital environments. VR is a tool that offers itself more than others do, enabling you to take the user directly into your own creation and to create a more immediate experience than possible with other media forms.
2. In what way did VR NOW help you implement Longing for Wilderness?
M: Because render times for realistic 360-degree images are quite high, it was especially the access to the processing power of the render farm that made the production of this movie possible. Furthermore, the collaboration with Animationsinstitut’s Research and Development Department was a great enrichment concerning all aspects of interactivity and installation.
3. What did you learn during your time at VR NOW?
M: Most of all, to experiment with the different ways of telling a story in 360-degree/VR, of directing the user’s attention, and of completely rethinking those aspects of traditional filmmaking that need revising when working with this new technology.
4. What is your VR NOW-funded, new project about?
M: Conscious Existence deals with the fact that we have all been gifted with a conscious mind that enables us to perceive and internalize the universe’s infinite beauty – a never-depleting source of inspiration and vital energy that we can “harvest” to keep our inner space healthy.
5. Why should one apply for VR NOW?
M: VR NOW enables us to freely and easily experiment with the medium, to use state-of-the-art technology, and to apply all available resources – which also include the Research and Development Department’s know-how.
