Immersion

The concept of immersion is a substantial part of modern cinematic storytelling. Visual Effects are commonly applied to suspend disbelief of the images presented in modern movie productions. One of the early examples of immersion can be found over a hundred years ago, when the Lumière brothers immersed spectators in the Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat. It is reported that this 50-seconds silent film had a particularly lasting impact on the spectators causing fear, terror and even panic (Wikipedia). Nowadays, advances in Real-time Graphics, and in Virtual and Augmented Reality offer a new and promising opportunity to advance the concept of immersion, experiences and storytelling to the next level. The R&D division of Animationsinstitut is committed to introduce such technological advances and creation pipelines as part of the study curriculum in the third year ANITRAILER/ANIPLAY productions. Additionally, the VR NOW Initiative of the Animationsinstitut allows graduates to engage in VR/AR projects beyond their time as students. The R&D division acts hereby as technological and scientific advisor. Results of this initiative are constantly exhibited at festivals and conferences such as SIGGRAPH VR Village 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
